Biophillic design principles

We've been using biophillic design principles to inform the design process. Biophillic design is an innovative way of designing environments in which we work, learn and play.

Simply put, biophilia is our innate biological connection with nature.

It explains why a garden view can enhance our creativity; strolling through a park has restorative, healing effects;  why patients heal faster when in contact with nature and why some workers are more productive than others.

How do we then design environments that have biophilic attributes and effectively enhance health and well-being?

• through the direct experience of nature (light, air, water, plants, natural landscapes),

• through the indirect experience of nature (images of nature, natural materials, natural colours),

• through the experience of space and place (transitional spaces).

Halden is one of Norway's highest-security jails, holding rapists murderers and paedophiles. Since it opened in 2010, at a cost of 1.3bn Norwegian kroner (£138m), it has acquired a reputation as the world's most humane prison. It is the flagship of the Norwegian justice system, where the focus is on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
