Smethwick Campus : concept proposal

The Smethwick Beacon concept uses the history of Chance's Glass and their manufacture of glass lens for over 2400 lighthouse as the starting point for the design. Five drums of various heights will be arranged in a group and located in the central courtyard.

Each drum will have different treatments to their sides; two drums are constructed as gabians and infilled with glass cuttle collected from the site, another has  quotations relating to the history of the site laser cut into the stainless steel sides and another has repeat tool patterns derived from pupil drawings. In addition it is proposed that the drums will contain internal lighting which will glow at night; particularly striking in the case of the glass filled drums.

The drums have been designed to be used as either informal seating or as elements that can be leaned on by pupils and site visitors.
